A category conversation

A working approach to turning a broad sourcing question into a useful professional discussion.

Define the buying context

Begin with the category and the business requirement, not a request for a supplier list. Explain the geography, the operating constraint and the stage of the buying process. This gives other practitioners a way to offer relevant experience without disclosing their own commercial terms.

Compare the right things

Organise the discussion around qualification, continuity, service requirements and total operating implications. Where participants use different assumptions, make those differences explicit. A productive exchange leaves the question clearer, even when it does not point to one preferred answer.

Carry the learning forward

Summarise the questions that still need evidence and the decisions that belong inside the organisation. Community discussion supports judgement; supplier selection still requires the buyer’s own due diligence, approvals and documented criteria.
